You've been through too much to allow yourself to be yoked up anymore with ELVIRA "The Mistress of the Dark", her cousin ELVIN "The Magician with Tricks up his Sleeve" or their uncle EBENEZER "The Scrooge!"
Tell the devil to keep it moving!
I'm telling you right now...YOU DON'T HAVE TO yoke up with STRANGER DANGER anymore! Tell CANDY MAN to move on! Tell DISRESPECTFUL, DISGRACEFUL & DISGUSTING you changed the locks, installed cameras & have 911 on speed dial! NEVER again will they have access to your life! ...NEVER!
Like TD Jakes said years ago..."I have the gift of goodbye!"

Keeping Confidences

This is a great read from Chuck Swindoll!
June 22, 2014
Can you keep a secret?
Can you? Be honest, now. When privileged information passes through one of the gates of your senses, does it remain within the walls of your mind? Or is it only a matter of time before a leak occurs? When the grapevine requests your attention from time to time, do you refuse to help it climb higher, or do you encourage its rapid growth, fertilizing it by your wagging, unguarded tongue? When someone says, "Now this is confidential," do you respect their trust or ignore it . . . either instantly or ultimately?
The longer I live, the more I realize the scarcity of people who can be fully trusted with confidential information. The longer I live, the more I value those rare souls who fall into that category! As a matter of fact, if I were asked to list the essential characteristics that should be found in any member of a church staff or officer on a church board . . . the ability to maintain confidences would rank very near the top. No leader deserves the respect of the people if he or she cannot restrain information that is shared in private.
Our minds might be compared to a cemetery, filled with graves that refuse to be opened. The information, no matter how juicy or dry, must rest in peace in its coffin, sealed in silence beneath the epitaph "Shared in confidence—Kept in confidence."
You and I wouldn't give a plugged nickel for a doctor who ran off at the mouth. The same applies to a minister or an attorney or a counselor or a judge or a teacher or a secretary . . . or a close, trusted friend for that matter. No business ever grows and remains strong unless those in leadership are people of confidence. No school maintains public respect without an administration and faculty committed to the mutual guarding of one another's worlds. When leaks occur, it is often a sign of character weakness, and action is usually taken to discover the person who has allowed his or her mental coffin to be exhumed and examined.
Information is powerful. The person who receives it and dispenses it bit by bit often does it so that others might be impressed because he or she is "in the know." Few things are more satisfying to the old ego than having others stare wide-eyed, drop open the jaw, and say, "My, I didn't know that!" or "Why, that's hard to believe!" or "How in the world did you find that out?"
Solomon writes strong and wise words concerning this subject in Proverbs. Listen to his counsel:
Wise men store up knowledge,
But with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand. (10:14)
When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable,
But he who restrains his lips is wise. (10:19)
He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets,
But he who is trustworthy conceals a matter. (11:13)
The one who guards his mouth preserves his life;
The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. (13:3)
He who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets,
Therefore do not associate with a gossip. (20:19)
Like a bad tooth and an unsteady foot
Is confidence in a faithless man in time of trouble.
Like a city that is broken into and without walls
Is a man who has no control over his spirit. (25:28)
From now on, let's establish four practical ground rules:
  1. Whatever you're told in confidence, do not repeat.
  2. Whenever you're tempted to talk, do not yield.
  3. Whenever you're discussing people, do not gossip.
  4. However you're prone to disagree, do not slander.
Honestly now, can you keep a secret? Prove it.

Earning Trust (Part 1)

Who can stand under the purification process of God?

Who can remain unchanged through the fire of God?

Isaiah asked these questions and then answered them with a list of TRAITS for the kind of people who can STAND in a crisis.

Isaiah 33:14-16 The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling seizes the godless ones. [They cry] Who among us can dwell with that devouring fire? Who among us can dwell with those everlasting burnings? 15He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises gain from fraud and from oppression, who shakes his hand free from the taking of bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes to avoid looking upon evil. 16[Such a man] will dwell on the heights; his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks; his bread will be given him; water for him will be sure. (amplified)

INTEGRITY - the Leader's LIFE and WORDS must match.
  • "He that walketh righteously and speakth uprightly."

What is integrity?
  • Steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code.
  • Moral soundness.
  • Honestly.
  • Freedom from corrupting influence or motive.
  • Uprightness.
  • Rectitude.
  • The quality or condition of being whole or undivided.
  • Completeness.

A sitcom included an interesting statement "I learned about integrity from my father.  He had five wives but never missed an alimony payment."

When integrity is present in a leader - it's great.
If it's missing it's terrible.

Five Steps to Strengthening your Leadership Integrity

1. Determine to never do anything privately that wouldn't pass public scrutiny.
  • Movies, TV programs, computer, etc.
  • It's amazing what people will do when they are 100 miles from home.  Always remember, even if people can't see...God can see.
  • Watch your "P's" & "Q's" - keep your testimony in tact.
2. Determine to never do anything the Scriptures frown upon.
  • Copy the lifestyle of many Bible heroes.
  • Even though the Scriptures may be silent on a certain subject, the Holy Spirit will direct you in your "knower" (innermost being) on what is acceptable.
  • You cannot teach the "10 Commandments" to others if you yourself are not keeping them.
3. Determine to never do anything that will bring shame to the Kingdom.
  • We are children of God and citizens of the Kingdom.
  • We have reputations to uphold.
  • Even the world knows what a believer is supposed to look and act like.
  • At the end of the day, if your behavior causes others to stumble, both believer and non-believer, you'll not only shoot yourself in the foot with an impossibility to lead but you'll end up causing the work of God to lose credibility in the eyes of present day skeptics.
4. Determine to never do anything that will rob you of your self-worth.
  • God made you.
  • You are His creation.
  • If we make choices that cloud our Godly reflection we will lose our self-worth.
  • We are the watchman.
5. Determine to never do anything that will make you vulnerable to Satan.
  • Don't be a casualty in ministry.
  • Watch for landmines.
  • Steer clear of areas you may have struggled with before coming to Christ. (i.e., alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, partying, immoral relations, etc.)
  • Even if you feel "confident" that you're "past the ability to be tempted" - the Bible teaches us to not put any confidence in the flesh.
  • We aren't helping our situation if we put our flesh in a "familiar" area of previous struggle.

Integrity is a MAKE or BREAK characteristic.  Once it's lost...it's extremely difficult to earn trust again.  It is possible to earn it again in the process of TIME...because time is the GREAT LEVELER.  However,  to do so, one must remain humble, teachable and willing to accept full responsibility of their actions.   The process of restoration (Galatians 6:1) can be a beautiful example of GRACE and a pattern from which to follow in the future.

Does Anyone Keep Their Word?

  • Are we responsible for promises made?
  • What about honesty & integrity?
  • Is there a double standard for pastors, politicians, world leaders and everyone else?
  • How do you feel when someone makes a promise to you and doesn't keep their word or makes excuses to get out of it?
  • If a "vow" is not faithfully honored then how can the person ever be trusted?
  • Is keeping one's word really important and will God hold people accountable for what they promise?
  • How can people believe a person who doesn't keep their promised word?
  • What does God think when people make up excuses in order to get out of keeping their word?
God spoke the world into existence and promised to save us from our sins by sending us His Son to die on the cross. If we repent asking Jesus to come into our heart, God will keep His word to save us!

  • God keeps His word. Does He expect us to keep ours?
  • Does God hear every word said and every promise made?
  • Will He hold Pastors, Politicians, and World leaders more accountable than the rest of the world for what they speak and promise to do?
  • Why?
Keeping promises demonstrates our “True Inner Self.” It shows whether or not we have corruptible or incorruptible morals (fruitful seed) inside of us. Integrity, Honor, Self-respect and Honesty means everything to man and to the Lord! What kind of Christian walk does the Lord desire us to have? Is keeping one's word really important or do we have the right to alter and change it? Does the world respect people who break their promises? A broken promise means a broken trust and relationship. Trust and respect as well as one's honor is the basis of our relationship with our Lord. He expects us to keep our word, (vow, oath) to others as well!

God doesn't accept altering promises!

Leviticus 27:9-10 And if it be a beast, whereof men bring an offering unto the LORD, all that any man giveth of such unto the LORD shall be holy. He shall not alter it, nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good

When you give your word to someone you are also giving it unto the Lord. The Lord teaches us in the Bible that we must not go back on our promises even if we have to pay a higher price to keep them. Our promises are taken seriously and we will be held accountable for them. Changing our minds is not acceptable to the Lord!

Pastors, as keepers of the flock, must have a high standard of morals because they answer directly to God. A Pillar of society!

1 Timothy 3:14-15 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

The local congregation belongs to the Lord and the responsibility of them is a serious matter. Pastors must be blameless and morally pure. Promises must be taken seriously! God holds them accountable because where Pastors lead the flock (congregation) will follow. To be like Jesus is to keep your promise!

A man shall NOT break his word, the Bible says.

Numbers 30:2 If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.

Moses being directed of God told people that they must keep their promises. A person's word is just the same as a written legal contract in the eyes of God. People who by their own free will have given a vow to do something must keep their word! Only a child's broken promises can be overruled by a parent, but even then correction must be made by the parent to teach the child about keeping one's word. (Numbers 30:3-8)

The importance of keeping one's word is a matter of Integrity!

Psalms 25:20-21 O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.

Integrity and righteousness are the two most important things for a Christian to have. Uprightness and Integrity demonstrate what we believe, and how consistent of a walk we have with Jesus. Pray to the Lord to help you keep your promises and strive to be pure before the Lord. A man has real dignity of character when he has high integrity!

A broken promise is a sin and will be judged by the Lord. God punishes the wicked!

Leviticus 5:4-5 Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these. And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:

God requires Christians to keep their word no matter how uncomfortable or unpleasant it may become. Our "yea," is enough to bind us before God as a promise to someone. The only promises that we should not keep are sinful ones. Many times promises involve sacrifices out of our comfort zones. If you promised something just by saying you would do it then God expects you to do it to the "best of your ability" as if you were doing it for the Lord Himself.

We can't just confess the sin of breaking a promise and think we can go our merry way thinking that we no longer are accountable. As long as you are still able to fulfill your word (even if it's uncomfortable and you don't want to) you need to go to that person, repent of your sin and make amends by keeping your promise. Can you really come into the presence of God knowing that you refuse to keep your word? What kind of relationship can you have with the Lord if your are able to keep your word and don't?

Integrity means Honor with Respect.

Proverbs 19:1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

God classes Integrity more valuable than the riches of this world. He classes Integrity more valuable than anything that we could ever own. Cheating, stealing, lying, breaking one's promises, withholding tithe money out of greed or spite is the world's way but not what the Lord desires a Christian to be. We are required to live a higher standard of living by holding our integrity dear to ourselves. When people of the world look at you as a Christian do they say you are no different than them or do they say they really respect you? Poverty if far better if a person has integrity and honor than all the riches that every existed throughout time. What is your life worth? Can you take any material thing with you when you die? We all need to get our priorities straight and realize that keeping our word is important to our self-respect as well as our integrity.

A Pastor should never Compromise his Integrity no matter what!

Proverbs 12:3 A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

Solomon knew that our word is our bond (promise,) and following the Lords word is important as a Christian because His word is our bond to us. Our character is reflected by the words that we speak and the vows that we make. Broken promises cause a great deal of hurt and is the same sin of lying. Personal Integrity as a Christian is held valuable by God when we honor our commitments. People can't sin and get away with it because the Lord sees everything we say and do. No one can get away from their responsibilities (the promises that they make) and not answer to God for them. What kinds of rewards do you want in Heaven? When you see the face of Jesus, will He say, "Well done good and faithful servant," or will He have tears in His eyes over the hurts caused by broken promises?

Half truths are deceptive…

Genesis 12:11-13 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.

Sarai was Abraham's wife as well as his half sister but it was immorally deceptive and caused hurt as well as shame. Sarai was wealthy and beautiful and Abraham believed that she would be taken from him. He was also afraid that he would be killed too. Did Abraham trust God to keep His word to protect them? Abraham forgot that what God says He will do, He will do! His word is valuable and the Lord has integrity! Can we do no less than to faithfully follow God's example by keeping our word? If we trust the Lord to keep His word can people trust us to keep ours?

Once given our word we should never go back or alter it!

Leviticus 27:9-10 And if it be a beast, whereof men bring an offering unto the LORD, all that any man giveth of such unto the LORD shall be holy. He shall not alter it, nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good: and if he shall at all change beast for beast, then it and the exchange thereof shall be holy.

God expects us to keep our word even if it costs us dearly. He wants us to take and keep our promises and not alter or change our word to suit our selfishness. No matter how difficult, embarrassing, hard, or burdensome it may be, we still need to keep our word to the best of our ability. That doesn't mean that we have a right to grudgingly do it in a spiritual manner but as pleasing unto the Lord.

Be responsible with your words and vows!

Titus 2:7-8 In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

God desires us to be moral witness in our daily walk and that includes our morals. The words that we speak and the promises that we make demonstrate our Christian values. This is because of the people around us watching. We must value our words as if they were gold. People might see Jesus through our eyes if we are honest with our words. Avoid criticism and hurt by listening before you speak and honoring what you commit to when you do. Be sound of speech and honest in your promises!

Words reveal to the world and to God how honest we are.

James 3:9-10 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Speak words that are pleasing to God and act with honor upon the promises made. If you have promised something and back out of it, deep hurt can be left behind. This grieves the Holy Spirit and can cause a wound that may last a lifetime. We are never to hurt anyone of the Lord's children and when we do than there is a price to be paid. Can anyone truly stand before Jesus knowing that they hurt someone and not feel convicted? I can't, can you?

God never breaks His word nor does He give us the right to break ours.

2 Chronicle 21:7 Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons forever.

The light mentioned in this verse was the light of Jesus Christ God's very own son. Jesus the Messiah of the world sits upon the throne of David and will rule forever. He paid the price for our sins upon the cross. God kept His word by giving us His only begotten Son to take away the sins of the world. The Lord's word is valuable to us because by that promise being kept and fulfilled we might be saved. Words have value and we too must keep our promises like He did for us.

God's delights in people who keep their promises.

Proverbs 12:22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.
Proverbs 12:25 Heaviness in the heart maketh it stoop: (is heavy and hurts) but a word maketh it glad.

Words are important and have a great deal of value when used in the right way for Godly purposes. Have you ever seen someone who just had a promise broken to them or maybe you had a promise broken to you? What did it feel like? Think of something that really matters to you that someone has promised to do. Maybe they kept you waiting for it a long, long time and it really mattered to you. Now consider how you would feel if it were broken. Try stepping into someone else's shoes when you break your word to them. Feel terrible doesn't it? Is this the will of the Father to cause this kind of hurt? Is there a promise that you made to someone that you can still keep? What does God want you to do? What are you waiting for, honor your word and go do it!

The Vows we say must be said in truth and honesty. (Be careful for what you promise because God will hold you responsible!)

Ephesians 4:24-25 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

When we act like Godly people full of honor and self-respect than we are pleasing to the Lord. Our Christian walk should be seen by everyone we meet. We should daily strive to leave our sins behind taking up our cross and following the Lord's example. We should daily work at changing our attitudes and bring our words into line with the Word of God.

Lying by not keeping one's word causes hurts, disappointments, disruptions and disharmony to the body of Christ. It makes people loose respect as well as creates conflicts and destroys relationships. Don't let the devil deceive you into breaking your word or make you think that you can justify altering your word to suit you. That is being deceptive and God sees right through it. This kind of pain can become bottled up inside a person's heart for years to come.

We shouldn't allow the devil to divide us when the best thing we could do would be to honor our word in the first place. Integrity, honesty, decency, truthfulness and virtue are all required to show people that we love them. This is the will of the Father!

Just by saying you “will” do something, you have “given your word!”

Matthew 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

What does God want you to do but let your word be yes, yes or no, no when you are speaking?  People will come to respect you and follow your lead if you are honest. Always be truthful saying what you mean and meaning what you say! Honor your word so that it will be right before the Lord. Integrity, honor and respect is the reward for keeping one's word. Let's all remember to live up to the high standards that the Lord has set before us.

Integrity...Is It Really Necessary? (Part 5)

Probably one of the greatest examples of a man of integrity we have in the Bible is Joseph. Even though his brothers treated him wrongly, selling him into slavery, he maintained his relationship with the Lord, and continued to walk in integrity.
It is these two characteristics that caused him to be raised to the highest position in Egypt, as Pharaoh's prime minister (Genesis 41:40). Pharaoh saw the hand of God on Joseph's life, and saw in him someone with both wisdom and integrity; someone in whom Pharaoh could place his trust to do what was necessary.

Joseph didn't suddenly receive integrity as a gift from God when he needed it to serve Pharaoh; he lived in integrity throughout his life. We see this in the various things that the Bible records him doing.

After Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery, he became a slave of Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh's guard (Genesis 37:28, 36). That must have been quite a blow to Joseph, going from being the favorite son of Jacob, a wealthy man, to being a slave. Yet Joseph was faithful in his new position. So faithful that Potiphar promoted him and put him in charge of his whole household (Genesis 39:4). His integrity was so high at that point in his life that his master trusted him to the point that he "knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat" (Genesis 39:6).

Unfortunately, Potiphar's wife also saw these characteristics in Joseph and was attracted to him. She asked him to "lie with her" (Genesis 39:7). Not only did she do this once, but the Bible says she did this daily (Genesis 39:10).

Joseph's response the first time showed his integrity.

But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand. 9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
  • Genesis 39:8-9  8But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. 9There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
Not only did Joseph refuse Potiphar's wife the first time, but it says in verse 10 that he "hearkened not unto her" even though she was offering herself to him daily.

Finally, probably in frustration, she lays a trap for him and gets him alone in the house. "And she (Potiphar's wife) caught him (Joseph) by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out (Genesis 39:12). He was so adamant about protecting his integrity, that he didn't let her hand on his clothing stop him, and she literally tore his clothes off him in his escape.

Although Joseph acted with integrity, it cost him. Potiphar's wife lied to her husband, telling him that Joseph had come to rape her. Scripture doesn't tell us what Joseph's response to this accusation was, but in this case, although he knew it would cost him, he refused to say anything against her.

Prayer Focus

Even in prison Joseph acted with integrity. Joseph found favor in the sight of the warden of the prison and he put Joseph in charge of everything in the prison. His time in prison, and the integrity he showed there, ultimately led to him becoming Pharaoh's prime minister.

BFWC, let us walk in the light of integrity each day.  A lifestyle of integrity will produce a life of promised promotion!

Integrity...Is it Really Necessary? (Part 4)

As believers, and Christian leaders, we are called to be different from the world.  I'm not necessarily saying our appearance, but in our character.

We've already defined integrity...but here it is again..."the quality or state of being of sound moral principle; uprightness, honesty and sincerity."

Integrity is doing what God would say is the right thing...even if it costs you.  It means obeying God's law, speaking only truth, and putting the other person ahead of yourself.  It means displaying the character of God in your daily walk.
  • A man of integrity will always tell the truth, even if it makes him look bad.
  • A man of integrity will never take something that doesn't belong to him, even if there is an implied permission to do so, or it is "commonly understood" to do so.
  • A man of integrity will go back to a store to return the change if they give him too much.
  • A man of integrity will look for the owner of lost money instead of putting it in his own pocket.
  • A man of integrity would rather be cheated than allow another to be cheated in a business deal.
  • A man of integrity will do what he says he will do, even if it is difficult to do so.
  • A man of integrity will be where he says he will be, even if he has a problem doing so.  If he can't be there, he will call beforehand to let others know.
  • A man of integrity will put the needs of the whole before his own.
  • A man of integrity will "turn the other cheek" rather than hurt the other person.
  • A man of integrity would rather die than deny, or turn away from, his integrity.
Job 27:5 "I will never admit you are in the right; till I die, I will not deny my integrity."

Throughout Job's ordeal, he was given many opportunities and temptations to deny God.  Yet in all this, the Bible says he "sinned not."  Why?  Because even in the midst of torment Job held on to his integrity.

Prayer Focus

God recognized Job's integrity and said to Satan "And he (Job) still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason." (Job 2:3)

If someone has integrity, you can count on them in whatever situation.  Why?  Not because they'll do what you want, but they'll do the right thing, whether it is what you want, or not.  Again, they'll do the right thing no matter what it costs them.

Let us pray that integrity will be the "staple" of our Christian walk today.  If you have allowed your integrity to be tarnished...do the right thing...own up to it and confess your faults.  Do not blame others for your actions.  Come clean...face the music...go forward regardless of the consequences and learn from it.

The Scriptures teach us that "we shall be healed and our sins forgiven." (James 5:16)

Integrity...Is It Really Necessary? (Part 3)

Who are you?  Who are you really?

We discover our real identity when we come to grips with who we are on the inside.  Until we know who we are on the inside, our outside (image) is nothing more than a projected shell.

Is it possible to project an image for the world to see while being opposite on the inside?  Yes.  That's why it's so important to have your inside rooted to a strong character.

Strong character will produce lasting fruit and longevity in leadership.  Strong character is a result of personal discipline. (Personal Integrity)

Are you disciplined?

We consist of three parts:  body, soul and spirit.  A believer must live out of their spirit.  In doing so, our flesh has no choice but to obey.  A lack of discipline in our life comes from a decision to live from our flesh instead of our spirit.

Personal discipline affects multiple areas of our life including our habits: grooming, diet, exercise, rest, study, finances and thoughts.  Integrity affects all of these areas in our life.
  • Grooming - Shabby or sharp?  We are in a day where casual is accepted more and more.  However, Christians shouldn't be the shabbiest person in the room.
  • Diet, Exercise and Rest - Respecting your temple in how you feed it, use it and maintain it.
  • Study - Reading is vital for a leader.  However, in this electronic age we must guard our hearts from Satan's snares.
  • Finances - credit rating, savings plan, learn how to say to "no" to additional debt, etc.
  • Thoughts - Keep your mind true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable.  (Philippians 4:8)
Personal integrity is born in the practices of personal discipline.

Integrity...Is It Really Necessary? (Part 2)

Integrity is not just something that we cling to...it's something that clings to us.  Doing the right thing is not always easy but it's always the right thing to do.

Who do you think of when you say the word "integrity?"  Perhaps you're thinking of a Bible hero or a person who has made a lasting impression on your life.

Once you've encountered a real taste of integrity, you'll never forget it.

A ministry of integrity will be marked by good and godly people.  Christian leaders must be known as people in whom there is no deceit.  Just like Philip's brother, Nathanael, you can't hide integrity.  It will keep showing up in your life.

If it's the only thing that can be said about your leadership...it's enough.

Integrity is a garment we wear.  It is interwoven with threads of character that make our garment appear to be seamless. Thus, we allow the Holy Spirit to tailor stitch us for maximum coverage in all areas of our life.

"If you have integrity, nothing else matters.  If you don't have integrity, nothing else matters."  Alan K. Simpson - former US Senator

I'm persuaded that integrity should be at the top of the list for every Christian...especially leaders.  Honestly, you don't have to think about living a lifestyle of integrity if it's already in you.

"Christian leaders will never lead people to a height they have never climbed personally." Stan Toler

Webster's Dictionary says that "integrity" includes three aspects:  incorruptibility, soundness, and completeness.

Basically, personal integrity starts with your every day habits.

In his book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, John Maxwell says "Anyone can say he has integrity, but action is the real indicator of character.  Your character determines who you are.  Who you are determines what you see.  What you see determines what you do.  That's why you can never separate a leader's character from his actions."

Is there anything you're lying about right now?

Remember when your mom told you to wash your hands before dinner.  Sure, you ran to the restroom and turned on the faucet...but did you actually use soap, lather up and rinse?  When you came to the table and she asked, "did you wash your hands?"  You have a choice at that moment...do you say "yes" or "no?"  Only you know.  (Of course, if your mom was like my mom...she had eyes in the back of her head...plus the Lord always seemed to tell her about my actions and whereabouts.)

Why is she telling you to wash your hands?  It's a personal discipline.  She knows that you will need to develop good hygiene while eating.  Plus, personal integrity is born in the practices of personal discipline:  washing your hands today, telling the truth tomorrow.

Integrity...Is It Really Necessary?

The book of Acts describes the early church and it's challenges. One of those challenges was meeting the needs of a growing church while keeping everyone happy at the same time.

Sound like a challenge?

That church needed a team (staff) to feed all the people who showed up hungry for the church dinner. There were tables and chairs to set up; food to be served; dishes to wash; trash cans to be emptied; floors to be swept, etc.

If you were the leader and knew you needed help...what traits would you look for in a potential member of that team?
  • Sharp dresser?
  • Smooth talker?
  • Clean fingernails?
  • Charming personality?
  • Award winning smile?
  • Hard worker?
Perhaps. Think about it...wouldn't you want someone with those traits to wait on you at your favorite restaurant?

But this is not what the early church based their decision on. In Acts 6 we are given the standard for leadership. In fact, we know this particular position to be the role of a deacon (servant).
  • Acts 6:1-6 1 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists,[a] because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.

God isn't impressed with how you look, how you talk, what you wear, what you can do and where you've been.

Personal integrity is the main issue.

What is integrity?
  • An adherence to moral and ethical principles; honesty. (Random house dictionary 2011)
Integrity comes from within.  It's not something you have to parade around in front of people.  It is birthed from right choices, right associations, commitment to truth and unwavering faith.  If you have it...it will be good.  If you don't...it will be a disaster.

We live in a day and age...even in the church world...where we base our opinions of people by what we see on the outside rather than what's on the inside of an individual.

What do people know you by?

I promise you...in the end you'll only want to be known as a person of integrity.  A person who spoke the truth, modeled the truth and embraced the truth.

Integrity will follow you around like a senior yearbook picture.
