Believing and Belonging
Do you believe in what your local church is doing enough to belong to it?
Belonging to a local church through practical membership happens first when you believe in the work that the local church is doing to the degree that you want to belong to it.
When this happens, you’ve moved from convenience to commitment and from bystander to bootstrapper!
To merely attend a church is to be a spectator from the stands. On the other hand, when you belong to a church, you are actively involved in the work of the church. Anyone can attend and consume what the church is giving out...but people who belong are the ones who are investing their time, talent, and treasure in the cause. Honestly, there will always be those who just want the benefits of the church but refuse to share the responsibility.
As a leader, one of my greatest challenges is moving people from the sidelines to the field. Helping people understand the need for commitment to the local church body is an ongoing challenge. I believe one of the reasons is due to the climate in our culture to remain autonomous...to fly below the radar and not attach yourself to anything in particular for fear of being asked to do something that will require a commitment.
Due to this mindset, we are seeing an increase in spiritual orphans who jump from one church to the next without any identity, accountability, or commitment. Often, these are good people who have convinced themselves that they can be "good Christians" without actually belonging to a local church.
And yet, the Bible speaks to the need for believers to belong to an active local church.
1. Belonging to a local church establishes your identity as a believer.
John 13:35 "By this, all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
Identifying yourself as a disciple of Jesus means you’ve identified with a local group of disciples.
We cannot do life alone. When we choose to connect with a local body of disciples, regardless of background, race, or social status, we are testifying to the world that we belong to Him and to those He has connected us to for His Kingdom purpose. When we are connected to a body," we can truly be the "part of the body" He created us to be. The body is connected, not separated.
2. Belonging to a local church moves you from exclusive to inclusive.
As I mentioned, we cannot do life alone. This is why God "places" us in the body as He sees fit. He joins us in a local body, which requires us to learn how to get along. Like any family, we have to learn how to serve one another, love one another, and do so with unselfish motives.
The longer I am connected to a local church through practical membership, the more I find myself caring about others. The Apostle Paul said that we would experience empathy with our brothers and sisters in Christ: 1 Corinthians 12:26 "If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts suffer with it. Or if one part of our body is honored, all the other parts share its honor."
If we are merely casual acquaintances, we do not experience the benefit of forging relational fellowship. It’s in this relational fellowship that we discover we are not independent of one another but rather dependent on each other.
When I belong to a local church, I’m expressing to my brothers and sisters in Christ that I am just as committed to them as I am to Jesus Christ. In my commitment to the local church, I am modeling my commitment to Christ. Most of us are familiar with John 3:16. It’s a powerful verse that illustrates God’s great love for us. But, have you considered 1 John 3:16? "Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers". This expectation is placed on the shoulders of believers toward one another.
3. Belonging to a local church stretches my potential.
The greatest "stretching" I have experienced came through my participation in the purposes of the church. Obviously, attending church services is vital to my spiritual growth and health, but my greatest growth comes from participating, not just attending. The Bible says, "As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy, growing, and full of love" (Ephesians 4:16).
Since believers are called to belong to a local church body in order to function with purpose, we must also embrace the fact that this cohesion also identifies us as "family." The Bible mentions one another or each other over 50 times in the New Testament. We are commanded to...
• Love each other
• Pray for each other.
• Encourage each other.
• Admonish each other.
• Greet each other.
• Serve each other.
• Teach each other.
• Accept each other.
• Honor each other.
• Bear each other’s burdens.
• Forgive each other.
• Submit to each other.
• Be devoted to each other.
• and many other mutual tasks.
This is BIBLICAL MEMBERSHIP.
So, the question to each of us, especially to those who attend church services, is: with whom are you doing these with?”
4. Belonging to a local church meets needs.
When God "saved" me from my sin, He didn’t just save me to sit. He saved me to fulfill a purpose in His body. This is referred to as your "MINISTRY." Your ministry (assignment) in His body is meant to benefit everyone, not just you.
1 Corinthians 12:7 "A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church".
It is through the local church that believers discover, develop, and use their gifts. Even if your ministry or purpose has expanded to a national audience, you never lose your responsibility to your local church and the area you cover. Jesus has not promised to build anyone’s ministry; he has promised to build His church.
5. Belonging to a local church expands God’s reach.
Today, God is using His spiritual body to reach the world. We are His hands and feet among the nations. Yes, we are to love the local church and have tremendous relational fellowship within it. However, we are also called to carry this same relationship to the rest of the world. We start in our Jerusalem and then expand to our Judea, Samaria, and the rest of the world.
Ephesians 2:10 "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."
6. Belonging to a local church covers me.
Every believer needs the protection of their local church and leadership. I’ve said for many years, "Left to myself, I’m a trainwreck." Friends, none of us is immune to temptation. Left to ourselves, without accountability, we are all capable of sin. God knows this. This is why we are instructed to help hold each other accountable.
Hebrews 3:13: "But exhort one another daily, while it is called "today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin."
"Mind your own business" is not a Christian phrase. We are called and commanded to be involved in each other’s lives. If you know someone who is wavering spiritually right now, it is your responsibility to go after them and bring them back into the fellowship.
James 5:19-20 "19 My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, 20 you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back from wandering will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins."
When you belong to a local church, you are also afforded the spiritual protection of godly leaders. God gives shepherd leaders the responsibility to guard, protect, defend, and care for the spiritual welfare of their flock.
Hebrews 13:17 "Their work is to watch over your souls, and they know they are accountable to God."
The devil loves to disconnect believers from the local church. He picks us off one by one through offense, isolation, disconnection, etc., because he knows that if he can separate us from a local church and the covering of our leaders, we become an easy target.
Friend, being a "Christian" is more than just a commitment to Jesus; it is also a commitment to other "Christians". Let us be reminded that each of us must move from being "believers" to being "belongers."
You become a Christian by committing yourself to Christ, but you become a church member by committing yourself to a specific group of believers.
The first decision brings salvation; the second brings fellowship.

Blessed Are The Fraudulent or Faithful?
Luke 12:37 “Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.”
Faithfulness is a quality that is very often lacking in the moral fabric of men. It is an interesting attribute in that it requires something that every individual can provide. Anyone can & should be faithful. However, the Scripture says, “a faithful man who can find?” (Proverbs 20:6). It is difficult to find someone who is faithful & who remains faithful. We all know those who seemed to want to be faithful & appeared to be faithful for a while, but in time, they did not keep the charge that was committed to them.
True faithfulness is not something that is demonstrated initially, or even occasionally. A married person who is occasionally unfaithful to his or her spouse is not considered faithful. God intends for us to be faithful until death or until He comes. Our text tells us that there will be a special blessing for those “servants” who remain true to the Lord.
The Scripture says, “Blessed are those servants.” We are God’s servants. We belong to Him & we have committed ourselves to serve Him. We are not to serve our own interests & agendas, but we are to serve our Master, Jesus Christ. How long are we to serve? Until we are no longer excited about serving? Until our bodies are old & aching? We are to serve Him until He comes. THE BLESSED MAN is the servant “whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching.” The Lord Jesus Christ will come again to this earth. We are to serve our Savior until He comes. Have you ever known someone who seemed to be a loyal worker as long as someone was watching over him, or until the supervisor was out of sight? This is not a description of faithful service.
When Jesus comes, or when we go to be with the Lord, will we be found faithful? Those who are faithful will be rewarded. To those He finds watching, the Bible says, “he shall gird himself & make them to sit down to meat & will come forth & serve them.” This blessing is reserved for those who are found faithfully serving Jesus to the end. He will serve those who have been faithful servants. May He find us faithful.

Don't Let Your Soul Freeze To Death
We have so much to learn from God's creation.
This is just a glimpse of what the church looks like. We come together & find strength from one another.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 "Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken."
When you stop coming to church, your soul can freeze to death.

"I Love Jesus, But I Don't Do Church"
“I love Jesus, but I don’t do church.”
This is the beginning of a conversation that I have had countless times with people of all different ages, backgrounds & experiences. As well as: “I’m a Christian, but I don’t have to go to church in order to love Jesus.”
It’s true. We definitely don’t have to do anything for God, nor is our salvation based on our works or church attendance. But it’s also true that when we surrender our lives to Him, we naturally desire to learn more about Him, to be a part of the body of Christ & to be held accountable & pointed toward sanctification. We are called to live out an active faith.
One of my favorite verses is 2 Corinthians 5:17,“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away, behold, all things have become new.“
When we truly repent, surrender & choose to follow Jesus, we are given a new heart, one that desires godliness & holiness. We are given the opportunity to make the daily choice to leave our past lives behind us & move forward toward the righteous life that He has set out for us.
“If anyone claims to live in Christ, he must walk as He did.” 1 John 2:6.
I was saved at the age of 8 years old. I've been in church all of my life. I've seen the good, the bad & even the ugly side of ministry. I've seen people leave the church because of disappointment, hurt, affairs, divorce, hypocrisy, greed, pride, etc. I've seen people refuse to repent, refuse to forgive & hold on to hurt that made them bitter, angry, suspicious & broken.
So, as I write to our BFWC Family today, I'm not sitting behind a computer screen, lacking empathy or compassion toward the hurt or the disappointments that anyone has ever experienced. It's real & I have felt it too.
I'm also not ignoring the fact that the church is full of sinful people nor that there is hard pain & baggage to come along with it. I'm simply turning my eyes to Jesus, the author & perfecter of my faith & hope!
I have made the choice to not allow the sinful, broken people of the church (those who look just like me) to be a stumbling block that keeps me away from my sinless, perfect & loving Heavenly Father who simply wants to draw us to Himself.
The church isn’t primarily a building or a set of programs or events. It’s a family. A broken family, yes. But a family all-the-more, seeking God to love more, serve more & share light in a super, super dark world.
We see throughout the Bible that Christ Himself was part of the church. His apostles were as well.
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25.
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many.“
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” Ephesians 4:11-12
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:9, “You were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”
I fully understand that the ‘American Church’ with massive buildings, coffee shops & rockstar worship leaders with too-tight-skinny-jeans may not be what Christ had in mind. And we must be wise & discerning when choosing a church to ensure that it is bible-believing and bible-teaching.
But although some church buildings themselves may not be the same as the church in Jesus’ day, it is still made up of people who love the Lord (although imperfectly) & come together to hear His word.
While the context has changed, the mission remains the same – to glorify God & make disciples. Though the way we do things now may look a little different than first century Rome, it’s the same mission & strategy that propels us forward; assembling for worship, connecting in community, training up disciples.
I can almost hear some of the excuses as I type this:
I’ve heard it all. And, to be honest, many of these things I have thought myself until I came to a prayerful understanding by the Spirit of God.
Here are a few questions:
We can sit behind the scenes criticizing or we can live out an active faith – serving & getting involved – making real changes, loving on real people, living life alongside real pain.
The Enemy is strategic. He has come to steal, kill and destroy your faith, relationship with God & relationship with other believers.
If we constantly choose sleeping in on Sundays & breakfast with our family over church, if we choose a night out of entertainment over genuine community, sharing real life with one another & holy living, then we aren’t making a difference in the church that we may or may not see so many problems with.
We’re simply allowing the issues that we feel so strongly about to perpetuate as we carelessly look on.
I’ve witnessed church-hopping where people treat church like Goldilocks treated beds. People want that “just right” perfect church, but when they can’t find it, they simply walk away. All the Enemy had to do was distract them.
To that I say: Choose a place and stick with it. You’ll never find perfect. We should not be looking at what we can GET from the church, our hearts should be set on what we can GIVE the church.
As a reminder, the Enemy has the power to use both good & bad things to keep you from God things – but only if you let him. He uses distraction, bitterness, hard-heartedness, pride, awkwardness & even feel good/treat yourself days to his advantage.
C.S. Lewis said it perfectly: “The perfect church service would be the one we were almost unaware of; our attention would have been on God. But every novelty prevents this. It fixes our attention on the service itself; and thinking about worship is a different thing than worshipping. It is mad idolatry that makes the service greater than the god.”
My dear friends, God is the focus of the church. The service nor the people need to be perfect for you to hear His life-changing word. True life change happens in the church. We truly grow when we connect with every-day people, pour into them & allow them to pour into us.
The local church, led by Jesus, is the hope of the world & God’s means to disciple the nations & hasten his return. Matthew 16:18 says, “…On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
How can we despise or resent the church when Jesus not only said He was going to build it, but that He would use it to storm the gates of hell? That’s something I want to be a part of! Don’t you?
It’s true that there are churches out there which have fallen into the trap of trying to accumulate numbers rather than turning hearts toward God. But this isn’t the healthy church that God intended for it to be.
A bible-believing, bible-teaching church comes together as a reminder that we can only experience fruitful mission when we are fully abiding in & drawing strength from the true vine (John 15). His word is our daily bread.
And in a world offering countless different perspectives, there is one place that people can find truth (John 8:26). The church is a lighthouse in an ethical & immoral fog (Matthew 5:14–16).
If you claim to know & love God, yet do not have a desire to be a part of His church, I lovingly implore you to evaluate your relationship with Him. Get in His word & read what He has to say about His calling for us.
There are hundreds of things that we could do that would hinder us from sharing life with God’s people.
If you’re hesitant, I challenge you today to choose intentionality & join in worshiping God with a local church this week! I promise you that as many reasons as you might have not to go, there are even more reasons to trust God & pour your life & heart out for Him alongside His people.
Loving & Serving,
Pastor Hylton
